Benefits of an Advanced Motorcycle Test

The Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) is the equivalent of an advanced test for motorcyclists.
Who Can Apply?
Motorcyclists with full licences can apply for the ERS. It’s also possible to apply immediately after gaining such a licence. There are no other requirements. Many people turn to the ERS to enhance their driving skills. Others opt for the scheme after a break from riding or if they change to a more powerful bike.
The “Test”
The ERS doesn’t actually involve a test. Instead, motorcyclists receive a certificate once they prove a certain level of skill. The full name of the certificate is the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) Certificate of Competence – Enhanced Rider Bonus.Nature of the Training
The training meets a motorcyclist’s specific needs. This means that a motorcyclist has as much or as little training as necessary. Generally speaking, the training focuses on improving safety in certain aspects of motorcycling. These include negotiating bends, approaching junctions, overtaking, and a bike’s position on the road.Assessment
An experienced motorcyclist may already have sufficient skill dealing with some of these potentially risky situations. The training therefore begins with an assessment of a motorcyclist’s weaknesses and strengths. Motorcyclists can arrange the initial assessment with a trainer listed on the DSA RPMT (Register of Post-Test Motorcycle Trainers). The trainer uses the assessment to identify a motorcyclist’s weaknesses and strengths. The trainer then develops an individual training plan. This means that the ERS gives motorcyclists the chance to improve their skills in their weakest areas. An advantage of this approach is that motorcyclists needn’t worry about the implications of any weaknesses the trainer finds. Weaknesses don’t lead to the cancellation of a licence. The ERS goal is simply to turn the weak areas into strengths.
The Trainers
Motorcyclists who apply for the ERS can also have faith in the trainers. To become a trainer, a motorcyclist has to undergo and pass a tough training course. The trainer must also meet rigorous instruction standards. Only then can he or she become part of the RPMT.Cost
Because of the individual nature of the training, the cost varies. Trainers also charge different fees for their services. Motorcyclists should first contact one or more trainers to gain an idea of the likely price.Safety
The obvious benefit of ERS training is safety. Newly qualified motorcyclists, for instance, may feel they need the extra confidence that comes from taking the Enhanced Rider Scheme. Other motorcyclists may be intending to buy a larger bike but want to be sure they can handle it properly. Another group of motorcyclists who can benefit are those who have a full licence but are returning to a bike after a break. They may want to be certain they can cope. Finally, some motorcyclists are conscious that their skills are not what they used to be. The ERS can return them to a high riding standard.
